The amount of electricity produced from wind and solar energy is naturally fluctuating. This is why effective storage facilities are needed to keep the sustainably generated energy in reserve. Bernd Bartels, founder of BeBa Energie, has been pursuing the vision of producing hydrogen with green electricity and then storing it in a salt dome since 2006. The entrepreneur from Dithmarsch has already invested six figures in research and development of hydrogen storage. The next milestone will be reached with the approval by the mining authorities for the salt dome storage facility in Lieth near Hemmingstedt, which is up to 800 meters deep. With the pilot project, which has been positively assessed by the Kiel Ministry of the Environment, Bartels wants to demonstrate the advantages of hydrogen storage.
